Snippets are those lines of text under search results. Originally they were designed to give users a synopsis of what is on the page. Rich snippets and really spam have been an issue and added now there is another layer of spam. To combat this, Google has dropped the amount of rich snippets appearing in search results.

Google’s premise is rich snippets use techniques that markup content that is not relevant or is misleading. More and more snippets are violating Google’s Rich Snippet Quality guidelines. If you feel you are being unusually spammed in snippets, you can report rich snippet spam to Google by following the instruction to get to complaint forms and filling out the form.

According to Pierre Far from Google,

“While rich snippets are generated algorithmically, we do reserve the right to take manual action (e.g., disable rich snippets for a specific site) in cases where we see abuse, deception or other actions that hurt the experience for our users. If you do find such rich snippets that hurt the search quality, you can submit a spam report at this page.”

To get your report quickly to Google, there are two things you must do:

  1. Lit the URL of the web page listed in the Google results
  2. List the research query you used when searching Google.

If you feel that rich snippet spam is irresponsible or irritating to you, report it to Google.

You can easily fake rich snippets. Just add markup to your page and if Google accepts it, it will show up in search results. It is easy to fake reviews, products, businesses and people. You can also give a snippet of recipes, music, events, and interviews or just about anything you like. The problem comes in when the snippet is totally irrelevant to your page. If you find rich snippet spam, do notify Google. There are safeguards in place from Google security, and there are also those programmers who know how to get around security. Don’t use snippets in your search requirements if you are in experienced. You will have Google taking your site down and banning you from re-posting.
